City trips
Ho Chi Minh
The Mekong Delta doesn't just have water; it is water. To travel here is to surrender to the rhythm of the tides. We are leaving the concrete heat of Saigon for a world where the roads are rivers and the markets float. This is not a polished resort vacation. It is messy, vibrant, and alive.
This 3-day expedition cuts deep into the Mekong Delta. From the coconut islands of My Tho to the spiritual borderlands of Chau Doc, and finally to the bustling river capital of Can Tho. It is a journey of sampans, swamps, and stories told over cups of strong iced coffee.
Points of Interest: Vinh Trang Pagoda, Thoi Son Islet (Unicorn Island), Ben Tre Coconut Workshops.
The Experience: We depart at dawn, watching the city dissolve into green rice paddies. First stop: Vinh Trang Pagoda. It is an architectural fever dream—a mix of French colonial, Roman, and Khmer styles that somehow works perfectly. Then, we hit the Tien River. We board a boat to the Four Sacred Islands (Dragon, Unicorn, Turtle, Phoenix). On Thoi Son Islet, we switch to small rowing sampans. This is the iconic Delta moment: being paddled through narrow canals lined with nipa palms, sunlight dappling the water. We visit a bee farm to drink honey tea and watch coconut candy being made by hand—a sticky, sweet tradition that refuses to die. We end the day with a long drive west to Chau Doc, a border town where cultures collide.
Suggestions:
The Candy: Buy the coconut candy while it's still warm. The texture is completely different from the store-bought version.
The Evening: In Chau Doc, try the Che Buoi (Pomelo Sweet Soup). It is famous here for a reason—crunchy, sweet, and cooling.
Points of Interest: Ba Chua Xu Temple, Tra Su Cajuput Forest, Can Tho Cruise.
The Experience: Morning pilgrimage to Sam Mountain. We visit the Ba Chua Xu Temple, the spiritual heart of the South. The air is thick with incense and hope. Then, we enter Tra Su Forest. We board a "tac rang" (motorboat) and glide into a world of green. The water is carpeted with duckweed; the cajuput trees rise like ancient pillars. It is silent, save for the call of storks and water birds. We walk the "Bamboo Bridge of Ten Thousand Steps," a winding path through the swamp that feels like walking on water. We head to Can Tho, the capital of the Delta. Dinner is on a river cruise. It’s touristy, yes, but watching the lights of the city reflect on the Hau River while listening to folk music is a necessary cliché.
Suggestions:
Tra Su: Go to the observation tower. The view from above reveals the sheer scale of the forest—a green ocean in the middle of rice fields.
Can Tho Night: After the cruise, walk to the Ninh Kieu Pedestrian Bridge. It’s the best place to people-watch and catch a river breeze.
Points of Interest: Cai Rang Floating Market, My Khanh Tourist Village, Truc Lam Phuong Nam Zen Monastery.
The Experience: 5:30 AM wake-up. We take a boat to Cai Rang Floating Market. This is the climax. Hundreds of boats, piled high with pineapples, watermelons, and turnips, trade on the open water. You eat breakfast (Hủ Tiếu noodles) on a boat, rocking with the waves. It is chaotic, loud, and utterly mesmerizing. We visit My Khanh Tourist Village, a preserved slice of Southern culture with an ancient house and fruit gardens. We pay respects at Truc Lam Phuong Nam, the largest Zen monastery in the West, a place of peace before the return to the city. We arrive back in Saigon in the evening, smelling of river mud and dried fish.
Suggestions:
Floating Market: Look for the "Cay Beo" (bamboo pole). Sellers hang their goods on top of the pole so you can see what they are selling from a distance. It’s the original billboard.
The Golden House: On the way back, stop at the "Gilded House" (Nha Go Dat Vang). It is an opulent, slightly bizarre testament to local wealth.
It happens on Day 2 in Tra Su Forest. The motor of the boat cuts. The rower uses a long pole to push you through the duckweed. The noise of the tour group fades. Suddenly, you are surrounded by nothing but the rustle of cajuput leaves and the call of a stork. The light filters through the canopy in shafts of green and gold. It is a moment of pure, prehistoric tranquility. You realize that this swamp is alive, breathing, and indifferent to your presence.
On Thoi Son Islet, I met a beekeeper named Uncle Ba. He didn't wear a suit. He just reached into the hive with his bare hands, pulled out a frame dripping with gold, and smiled. "Bees only sting if you are afraid," he said. I drank the tea made from that honey, mixed with kumquat and pollen. It was sweet, sour, and tasted of sunlight. It was a reminder that in the Delta, nature provides everything, if you know how to ask.
The Mekong Delta is changing fast. The floating markets are shrinking as roads improve. The silence of the Tra Su forest is a rare commodity. You need to see this way of life before it becomes a museum exhibit. You need to eat the fruit on the boat and walk the monkey bridges. Pack your shorts. The bus leaves at dawn.
