Spring in Northeast Vietnam is a revelation. It is the time when the grey karst peaks of Ha Giang are softened by the pink of peach blossoms and the white of plum flowers. It is when the water of Ban Gioc Waterfall is crystal clear, not churned to mud by summer rains. We are embarking on a six-day expedition that traces the Chinese border, a route of jagged geology and deep history.
This is a kinetic journey. We will drive roads that look like ribbons dropped from the sky, stand on the edge of the country, and float on lakes that feel like they belong in a fairytale. From the stone deserts of the Dong Van Plateau to the lush valleys of Cao Bang, this itinerary is a deep dive into the raw, unfiltered beauty of the north.
Points of Interest: Ha Thanh Village.
The Experience: We land in Hanoi and immediately push north. The drive is long, a transition from the chaotic Red River Delta to the looming mountains. We arrive in Ha Giang, the gateway to the frontier. We visit Ha Thanh Village, a Tay ethnic enclave. Here, stilt houses with palm-leaf roofs sit amidst rice paddies. We listen to the Then singing, a haunting, beautiful tradition that connects the living with the spirits. Evening: Sleep in Ha Giang, preparing for the ascent.
Suggestions:
The Food: Try Chao Au Tau (poison porridge). It’s made from a toxic root that is processed until safe. It’s bitter, nutty, and said to cure fatigue.
Points of Interest: Heaven’s Gate, Twin Mountains, Hmong King’s Palace, Lung Cu Flag Tower.
The Experience: We climb the Bac Sum Slope to Heaven’s Gate. The air cools. We see the Twin Mountains, perfectly symmetrical hills that look sculpted by hand. We drive through Pho Cao, where earthen walls glow orange in the sun. The History: We stop at the Hmong King’s Palace (Vuong Chi Sinh). It is a fortress of wood and stone, built on opium wealth in a hidden valley. It feels secretive and powerful. The North Pole: We reach Lung Cu Flag Tower, the northernmost point of Vietnam. Looking out, you see a sea of stone cones stretching into China. Evening: Dong Van Old Town. Lanterns, corn wine, and cold mountain air.
Suggestions:
The Photo: The Hmong King’s Palace is best photographed from the entrance gate, framing the curved roof against the cypress trees.
Points of Interest: Ma Pi Leng Pass, Nho Que River (Tu San Alley), Meo Vac.
The Experience: Today, we drive the Ma Pi Leng Pass, the king of all passes. The road hangs on a vertical cliff. Below, the Nho Que River is a ribbon of jade. The Wow Moment: We descend to the water and board a boat. We drift through Tu San Alley, the deepest canyon in Southeast Asia. The cliffs rise 800 meters straight up. It is silent, grand, and terrifyingly beautiful. The Shift: We leave the stone plateau and drive east to Cao Bang, trading the grey rocks for green bamboo forests. Evening: Sleep in Cao Bang.
Suggestions:
The Boat: The ride down to the river is steep. Hold on tight to the motorbike taxi. It’s part of the thrill.
Points of Interest: Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave.
The Experience: We head to the border. Ban Gioc Waterfall is the fourth largest border waterfall in the world. Half is in Vietnam, half in China. We take a bamboo raft into the spray. The sound is a constant roar. The water falls in tiers, creating rainbows in the mist. The Underground: We explore Nguom Ngao Cave. It is wilder than the caves in Halong, filled with stalactites that sparkle like diamonds (silica). Evening: Return to Cao Bang.
Suggestions:
The View: Climb the small hill to the pagoda near the waterfall for a panoramic view of both the Vietnam and China sides.
Points of Interest: Pac Bo Historic Site, Lenin Stream, Karl Marx Mountain.
The Experience: We visit Pac Bo, where Ho Chi Minh lived in a cave after returning from 30 years of exile. The water here, Lenin Stream, is an impossible shade of turquoise. It is peaceful, beautiful, and heavy with history. The Drive: We drive south to Ba Be National Park. The landscape softens. We are deep in the jungle now. Evening: Sleep in a homestay or hotel near the lake, listening to the insects of the rainforest.
Suggestions:
The Water: Do not swim in Lenin Stream. It is considered sacred. Just admire the color.
Points of Interest: Ba Be Lake, Puong Cave, Widow Island.
The Experience: We board a boat on Ba Be Lake. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in Vietnam, sitting 150 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by limestone karsts and primary forest. We float through Puong Cave, where the river tunnels through a mountain, and circle Widow Island. It feels like Halong Bay, but without the salt and the crowds. The Return: We drive back to Hanoi airport, flying south with the dust of the frontier on our shoes.
It happens on Day 3. You are on the boat in the Nho Que River. The engine cuts out. You look up. The walls of Tu San Alley shut out the sky. The water is deep, cold, and emerald green. You realize you are a tiny speck in a geological cathedral that has stood for millions of years. It is the most humbling view in Vietnam.
At the Hmong King's Palace, I ran my hand along the stone walls. They are thick, built to withstand bullets and time. The guide told us that the King, Vuong Chi Sinh, ruled this area with an iron fist, trading opium for weapons with the French and later supporting the revolution. Standing in the courtyard, surrounded by carvings of poppies, you can feel the weight of that history. It’s a place where power, money, and war intersected in a hidden valley.
The peach blossoms of the northeast only bloom for a few weeks. The water of Nho Que is at its greenest right now. You need to stand at the border waterfall and sail the jade canyon. Pack your jacket. The plane leaves in the morning.
