City trips
Ho Chi Minh
New Year’s Eve in the city is a predictable cacophony of champagne corks and forced resolutions; New Year’s Eve in Northern Vietnam is a silent communion with geology. We are leaving the humid, frenetic energy of Saigon for the brooding, mist-laden karsts of Ninh Binh. This is not merely a vacation. It is a recalibration.
We are embarking on a 72-hour odyssey during the genesis of 2026. From the gargantuan ambition of Tam Chuc Pagoda to the subterranean silence of Trang An, this itinerary is designed to dwarf your ego and expand your lungs. It is a journey through the "Halong Bay on Land," a landscape so prehistoric it feels as though the dinosaurs just left five minutes ago.
Points of Interest: Noi Bai Airport, Tam Chuc Pagoda Complex.
The Experience: We depart Saigon at dawn. The flight is a quick hop over the spine of the country. We land in Hanoi, but we do not linger. We push south to Ha Nam. Suddenly, the horizon is dominated by Tam Chuc Pagoda. To call it a temple is an insult; it is a spiritual metropolis. It sits on 5,000 hectares of land, facing a lake with six islets that look like bells, backed by seven mountains that look like stars. We walk past 1,200 statues carved from volcanic rock. The scale is oppressive in the most magnificent way. It forces you to look up. It forces you to be quiet. Evening: We retreat to Ninh Binh, the ancient capital area. The night is dark here, the air smelling of woodsmoke and damp earth.
Suggestions:
The Perspective: Take the boat ride on Tam Chuc Lake if available. Seeing the temple complex from the water emphasizes its sheer mass against the limestone backdrop.
The Food: Ninh Binh is famous for Com Chay (scorched rice). Buy a bag. It’s the perfect crunchy antidote to a long day of walking.
Points of Interest: Trang An Landscape Complex, Am Tiem Cave (Tuyet Tinh Coc), Mua Cave.
The Experience: We board small sampans at Trang An. This is the core of the experience. The boatman (or woman) rows you through a labyrinth of river valleys and submerged caves—Dark Cave, Bright Cave, Wine Brewing Cave. It is silent, save for the dip of the oar. Next, Am Tiem Cave (Tuyet Tinh Coc). Historically, this was a place where tigers were kept to punish criminals. Today, it is a secluded valley accessible by a tunnel, featuring a jade-green lake surrounded by vertical cliffs. It feels hermetically sealed from the world. The Climax: We tackle Mua Cave. It’s not about the cave; it’s about the 486 stone steps leading up Lying Dragon Mountain. Your legs will burn. Your lungs will scream. But at the top, the view of the Ngo Dong River winding through the rice paddies is the single most photographed vista in Vietnam.
Suggestions:
The Climb: Do not rush the Mua Cave stairs. Stop at the mid-point viewing deck. The dragon statue at the top is jagged; watch your footing if you climb onto it for a photo.
The Boat: Tip your rower. They are the engine of your experience.
Points of Interest: Bai Dinh Pagoda, Hoan Kiem Lake.
The Experience: We visit Bai Dinh Pagoda. If Tam Chuc is the new giant, Bai Dinh is the established titan. It holds the record for the largest bronze Buddha in Southeast Asia and the longest corridor of Arhat statues. We wander through the massive halls, the smell of incense heavy in the air. We return to Hanoi for a brief flirtation with the capital. A walk around Hoan Kiem Lake connects us back to the urban rhythm before the flight home. The Return: We land in Saigon in the evening, carrying the silence of the caves back into the noise of the city.
Suggestions:
The Corridor: Walk the full length of the Arhat corridor. Touching the statues' hands is said to bring luck, which is why the bronze is polished to a shine.
It happens on Day 2, at the summit of Mua Cave. You pull yourself up the final stone step, gasping for air. You look down. The world has opened up. The river below is a silver ribbon; the boats are tiny specks. To your left and right, jagged limestone teeth bite into the grey winter sky. The wind is cold and fierce. In that moment, standing on the spine of the stone dragon, the physical exertion evaporates, replaced by a profound sense of conquest. You are on top of the ancient world.
In Trang An, I sat in the sampan, mesmerizingly watching the water ripple. I looked back at our rower. She was peeling a mandarin orange with her hands while rowing the boat with her feet. She caught my eye, smiled, and offered me a slice of the fruit, never breaking the rhythm of the oars. It was a moment of casual, supreme skill that defined the people of this region: hardworking, adaptable, and unexpectedly generous.
The New Year is a time for reflection, not just celebration. There is no better place to reflect than in the shadow of a mountain that has stood for two hundred million years. You need to trade the fireworks for the fire of a temple candle. Pack your jacket. The plane leaves at 06:00 AM.
