City trips
Ho Chi Minh
There is a rhythm to Vietnam that oscillates violently between the sacred and the profane, the silent and the cacophonous. One moment you are kneeling on a mountain, surrounded by the murmur of a thousand prayers; the next, you are waist-deep in the South China Sea, cracking open a lobster with your bare hands. This is not a contradiction. It is the balance.
We are embarking on a 72-hour traverse that captures this duality perfectly. We begin at Ta Pao, a pilgrimage site carved into the jungle, before descending to the rugged, sun-bleached coast of Binh Hung. This is not a tour for the passive observer. It requires legs strong enough for 400 steps and a stomach ready for the freshest seafood in the archipelago.
Points of Interest: The Statue of Our Lady of Ta Pao, 400 Stone Steps.
The Experience: We depart the humid grip of Saigon before dawn, chasing the sunrise along the highway. Our target is the Ta Pao Marian Center in Binh Thuan. Here, faith is physical. You climb. There are over 400 steps leading up the mountain to the white statue of the Virgin Mary. The climb is a purgatory of humidity and exertion, but the summit offers a silence that rings in your ears. You stand amidst the jungle canopy, looking out over the Tanh Linh valley, feeling a strange, heavy peace. We descend, legs trembling, and drive toward the ocean. The landscape shifts from lush green to the arid, cactus-studded terrain of Ninh Chu. We check in as the sun sets, the air now tasting of salt instead of incense.
Suggestions:
The Climb: Do not rush. Stop at the landings. Watch the elderly pilgrims. Their devotion is more impressive than the view.
The Evening: Ninh Chu is quiet. Walk the seawall. The squid fishing boats light up the horizon like a floating city.
Points of Interest: Bai Kinh, Bai Nuoc Ngot (Freshwater Beach), Bai Cay Me, The Lighthouse.
The Experience: We leave the mainland at Bai Kinh. The boat ride to Binh Hung Island is short, a mere hop over water so clear it looks like liquid glass. This is the domain of the fishermen. We transfer to a glass-bottom boat or a local barge to explore. Bai Nuoc Ngot is a geological marvel—a beach where cold freshwater from the mountain meets the warm saltwater of the sea. You can swim in both simultaneously. At Bai Cay Me, the limestone cliffs drop vertically into emerald water. We snorkel. The coral here is not the bleached graveyards of popular resorts; it is vibrant, breathing, and teeming with neon life. Lunch: We eat on a floating raft (Be Noi). The menu is the ocean’s inventory. Afternoon: We explore the island’s narrow alleys, visiting the Binh Hung Pagoda and the Nam Hai Tomb (Whale Temple), reminders that on an island, the gods are always watching the weather.
Suggestions:
The Snorkel: Don't just look down. Look at the cliff walls. Swifts build nests in the crevices.
The Transport: The island’s roads are impossibly steep. Take the "Tuk Tuk" truck. It’s a bone-rattling ride that feels like a roller coaster designed by a madman.
Points of Interest: Dong Cuu (Sheep Field), Thai An Vineyard.
The Experience: We return to the mainland and the landscape shifts again. Suddenly, we are in Provence, or a fever-dream version of it. Dong Cuu (Suoi Tien Sheep Field) is a surreal patch of green in a dusty province, populated by fluffy, confused sheep. It is undeniably photogenic. Next, the Thai An Vineyard. Ninh Thuan is the driest province in Vietnam, yet it produces the best grapes. We walk under trellises heavy with fruit, tasting the local wine. It is sweet, potent, and tastes of the sun-baked earth. We drive back to Saigon, the silence of the mountain and the roar of the ocean fading into the city traffic.
Suggestions:
The Grapes: Buy the "Mat Nho" (Grape Syrup). Mix it with soda water and ice. It is the best recovery drink after three days of travel.
It happens on Day 2, on the floating raft. The main course arrives: Lobster. These aren't the frozen tails you get in a city restaurant. These are creatures pulled from the cages beneath your feet ten minutes ago. They are steamed simply with lemongrass. You crack the shell—it’s hot, sharp work. The meat is sweet, firm, and smells of the deep ocean. You dip it in a mixture of chili, salt, and lime. In that moment, rocking gently on the tide, surrounded by turquoise water, you realize that this meal is the true religion of the coast.
Halfway up the steps to Ta Pao, I stopped to catch my breath. The humidity was suffocating. An old woman, perhaps eighty years old, shuffled past me. She was barefoot. She carried a heavy bag of fruit, presumably an offering. She didn't look tired; she looked focused. She smiled at me, a young, sweating tourist, and pointed upward. "Mother is waiting," she said in Vietnamese. She didn't stop. I watched her ascend, her frailty vanishing under the weight of her purpose. It was a humbling reminder that travel is not just about moving your body; it's about moving your spirit.
The statue of Our Lady looks out over the valley forever, but the weather does not wait. The clear waters of Binh Hung are calmest right now. The grapes are ripening in the vineyard. You need to wash the city dust off your soul. You need the mountain air and the salt spray. Pack your walking shoes and your swimsuit. The bus leaves at 5:30 AM.
