THE HIGHLAND FUGUE: Into the Lungs of Indochina

Saigon breathes exhaust; the Central Highlands breathes mist. To travel here is to ascend, literally and metaphorically, into a Vietnam that feels older, slower, and profoundly more mysterious. We are leaving the lowlands. We are trading the humidity of the delta for the chill of the plateau, swapping rice paddies for endless regiments of coffee trees growing in soil the color of dried blood.

This is a four-day expedition through the spine of the country. Buôn Ma Thuột, Pleiku, Kon Tum. These names evoke the rumble of gongs and the smell of woodsmoke. From the thundering cascade of Dray Nur to the silent, pine-shrouded ghost town of Măng Đen, this itinerary is a study in isolation and grandeur.

The Basalt Traverse

DAY 1: The Roar of the Earth | Saigon – Dray Nur – Buon Ma Thuot

Points of Interest: Dray Nur Waterfall, Coffee Capital.

The Experience: We depart the metropolis at dawn. The drive is a shedding of skin, the concrete slowly yielding to the rubber plantations of Binh Phuoc and finally, the red basalt soil of Dak Lak. We stop at Dray Nur Waterfall. This is not a polite trickle of water. It is a geological event. A wall of water crashes down 30 meters into a mist-filled basin, framed by cliffs that look like petrified lightning. You can feel the vibration in your chest. The Arrival: We reach Buôn Ma Thuột in the evening. The air is cool. The smell of roasting coffee is inescapable.

Suggestions:

The Evening: Don't stay in the hotel. Walk to the Coffee City area. Order a "Ly Cafe Ban Me." It’s thick, strong, and hits your bloodstream like rocket fuel.

DAY 2: The Elephants & The Eyes | Buon Don – Sea Lake – Pleiku

Points of Interest: Buon Don (Don Village), Bamboo Suspension Bridge, Sea Lake (T’Nung), Minh Thanh Pagoda.

The Experience: Morning in Buon Don, the legendary land of elephant hunters. We walk the bamboo suspension bridge over the Serepok River. It creaks. It sways. Beneath you, the river flows through the roots of ancient banyan trees. We visit the Ancient Stilt House, a 120-year-old architectural marvel built for the "Elephant King." We push north to Pleiku. The landscape shifts to rolling hills. We arrive at Sea Lake (Ho T’Nung). It is an extinct volcanic crater filled with water so still it looks like a sheet of glass dropped into the forest. The Contrast: We end at Minh Thanh Pagoda. Unlike the rustic wooden structures of the tribes, this is a masterpiece of Japanese-style architecture, with curved roofs and a towering pagoda that glows gold in the sunset.

Suggestions:

At Sea Lake: Walk to the very end of the promontory. The wind there is constant and carries the scent of pine. It is the most peaceful spot in the province.

DAY 3: The Second Dalat | Mang Den – Kon Tum – Kon Klor

Points of Interest: Mang Den Pass, Dak Ke Lake, Pa Sy Waterfall, Kon Klor Bridge, Wooden Cathedral.

The Experience: We ascend further to Măng Đen. They call it the "Second Da Lat," but it is wilder, quieter, and spookier. We walk through pine forests to Dak Ke Lake and the Pa Sy Waterfall, a silver thread cutting through the jungle. We pay respects at the Statue of Our Lady of Mang Den, a pilgrimage site shrouded in both mist and miracles. We descend to Kon Tum City. The Kon Klor Suspension Bridge glows orange against the setting sun. Nearby, the Wooden Cathedral stands as a testament to syncretism—a Roman Catholic church built entirely of ironwood in the traditional Ba Na stilt style. It is black with age and utterly beautiful.

Suggestions:

In Mang Den: Bring a jacket. The temperature can drop 10 degrees in an hour.

The Cathedral: Touch the wood. There isn't a single nail in the structure. It is held together by joinery and faith.

DAY 4: The Return of the King | Pleiku – Song Tuong – Saigon

Points of Interest: Song Tuong Monument (Twin Elephants).

The Experience: We drive back through the coffee corridor to Buôn Ma Thuột. We stop at the Song Tuong (Prosperity) monument, the twin elephants that guard the city center. It’s a final nod to the giants that once roamed these hills. The drive back to Saigon is a decompression. We arrive in the evening, carrying the red dust on our shoes as a souvenir.

The Silence of the Crater

It happens on Day 2 at Sea Lake (Bien Ho). You walk down the pine-lined path. The noise of the city fades. Suddenly, the crater opens up. The water is an impossible shade of blue-green. You are standing on the lip of a volcano that died millions of years ago, and now, it just sleeps. The locals call it the "Eyes of Pleiku." Looking into it, you feel a vertigo that has nothing to do with height and everything to do with time.

The Highland Secrets

The "Com Lam" Rule: In Buon Don, skip the rice on a plate. Order Com Lam (rice cooked in bamboo tubes) and Ga Nuong (grilled chicken). Dip the chicken in the salt-chili-basil mixture. It is the taste of the forest.

The Pine Resin: In Mang Den, the air smells medicinal. It’s the pine resin. Take deep breaths. The locals swear it cures everything from asthma to heartbreak.

The Wooden Saint

In the Kon Tum Wooden Cathedral, I watched a nun lighting candles. The church was dark, the ironwood walls absorbing the light. Outside, the heat was blistering; inside, it was cool and smelled of beeswax and old timber. She didn't speak. She just pointed to the stained glass, glowing like jewels in the darkness. It struck me that this building has survived wars, bombings, and revolutions, simply by being made of the forest itself. It wasn't just a church; it was a fortress of quiet.

The Mist is Lifting

The Central Highlands are not a theme park. They are real, gritty, and spectacular. The coffee harvest is coming. The waterfalls are full. You need to trade the city smog for the pine air of Mang Den. You need to see the Eyes of Pleiku before the tour buses arrive in force. Pack your warm clothes. The bus leaves on Thursday.
