City trips
Ho Chi Minh
Saigon is a city that never unclenclenches its jaw; it is a relentless, humid machine. To survive it, you must occasionally escape it. The answer lies ninety-nine kilometers to the northwest, where the flat, green monotony of the Mekong Delta is violently interrupted by a single, jagged granite tooth biting into the sky.
This is Black Virgin Mountain (Nui Ba Den).
We are not embarking on a lazy Sunday drive. This is a kinetic, high-altitude pilgrimage. In a single day, we will traverse the "Land of Steel," ascend to the cloud layer via the world’s most impressive cable car systems, dine on a global buffet at 986 meters, and stand before the Eye of God at the Holy See. It is a tour of extremes: heat and cold, history and modernity, the sacred and the gastronomic.
Points of Interest: Trang Bang, Black Virgin Mountain, Van Son Peak.
The Experience: We depart the city at 05:00 AM, slicing through the morning fog. The first stop is non-negotiable: Trang Bang. Here, we eat Banh Canh (thick noodle soup). This isn't just breakfast; it's a ritual. The broth is clear, the pork is tender, and the herbs are fresh enough to snap. By 08:30, the mountain looms. We bypass the arduous hike of the past and board the Van Son Cable Car. This is engineering as art. In eight minutes, you are rocketed from the sweltering heat of the base to the cool, mist-laden air of the summit. The cabin glides over the canopy, revealing the checkerboard fields of Tay Ninh below. The Climax: You step out onto Van Son Peak, the "Roof of Southern Vietnam." At 986 meters, the temperature drops. The gardens here are manicured perfection, a riot of hydrangeas and tulips that have no business growing in the tropics.
Suggestions:
The Photo: Don't just take a selfie at the milestone. Walk to the edge of the Cloud Hunting balcony. If you are lucky, the white sea of clouds will be below your feet.
The Optional Path: If you seek spiritual favors, buy the add-on ticket for the Hang Pagoda Cable Car. It stops midway up the mountain at the spiritual complex. It’s a steeper, more somber ride.
Points of Interest: Buffet Nam Chau (Five Continents Buffet).
The Experience: Lunch is served in the clouds. The Buffet Nam Chau is not your standard tourist trough. It offers over 80 dishes ranging from local Vietnamese specialties to Western roasts. You eat while looking out through floor-to-ceiling windows at the curvature of the horizon. It is gluttony with a view.
Points of Interest: Cao Dai Holy See, Tay Ninh Grape Garden, Go Ken Pagoda.
The Experience: We descend and shift from nature to theology. The Cao Dai Holy See is unlike any religious structure on earth. It is a Technicolor cathedral, a fusion of a French church, a Chinese pagoda, and an Islamic mosque. Inside, the Divine Eye watches you from a blue globe. It is beautiful, disorienting, and utterly unique. We ground ourselves with a visit to a Grape Garden. Yes, grapes in Tay Ninh. You walk under the trellises, smelling the sugar and earth. Our final stop is Go Ken Pagoda, the oldest in the province, where a massive white statue of Guan Yin stands amidst the green rice paddies, offering a final moment of Zen before the drive back.
Suggestions:
At the Holy See: Be silent. The worshippers wear color-coded robes (Red for Confucianism, Blue for Taoism, Yellow for Buddhism). Watch the procession; it is hypnotic.
The Souvenir: Buy the "Muoi Tom" (Shrimp Salt). It is the taste of Tay Ninh—spicy, salty, and umami-rich.
It happens on the balcony of Van Son Peak. You are standing 986 meters up. The heat of the delta is a distant memory. Suddenly, the wind shifts, and the cloud cover breaks. A shaft of sunlight hits the giant bronze statue of the Lady Buddha (Tay Bo Da Son) located on the summit. She stands 72 meters tall, cast in copper, looking serene against the turbulent sky. In that moment, the scale of the mountain and the smallness of the human experience collide. It is a "Wow" moment that feels religious, even if you are an atheist.
I remember the first time I walked into the Cao Dai Holy See. The noon ceremony was beginning. A choir of schoolgirls began to chant, a sound that was half-hymn, half-drone. I looked up at the ceiling, painted sky-blue with clouds, and saw the Divine Eye staring back. It felt like walking into a Salvador Dali painting that had come to life. A priest in a red robe caught my eye and nodded slightly. In a country often defined by its wars, here was a religion built entirely on the premise that all religions are one. It was the most optimistic thing I had ever seen.
Tay Ninh is close enough to touch, yet feels a world away. The air on Van Son Peak is crisp right now. The shrimp salt is fresh. The Divine Eye is watching. Don't waste another Sunday in a coffee shop. Go touch the clouds. The bus leaves at 05:00 AM. Sleep when you're dead.
