City trips
Ho Chi Minh
Central Vietnam is a study in violent contrasts. One moment you are standing on a glass bridge suspended by stone hands in the clouds; the next, you are rattling over a precipice on a colonial-era railway, watching the South China Sea crash against the rocks below. It is a region where the neon ambition of Da Nang collides head-on with the melancholic, moss-covered grandeur of Hue.
We are embarking on a 72-hour sprint. This is not a beach holiday. This is a cultural injection. From the marble caves of the coast to the imperial silence of the Citadel, moving via the legendary "Heritage Train," this itinerary is designed to overload your senses in the most pleasurable way possible.
Points of Interest: My Khe Beach, Son Tra Peninsula, Marble Mountains, Hoi An Ancient Town.
The Experience: We begin in Da Nang, a city that has pulled itself from the sand to become a metropolis of bridges and light. After a lunch of Mi Quang (turmeric noodles that stain the soul as much as the shirt), we ascend the Son Tra Peninsula. Here, the Lady Buddha watches the sea with eternal patience. We delve into the Marble Mountains. This is not a hike; it is a spelunking expedition into the sacred. The limestone karsts are honeycombed with caves housing Buddhist shrines. The smell of incense and damp stone is intoxicating. The Evening: We drift south to Hoi An. The Ancient Town is a preserved trading port where time stopped in the 18th century. No cars. Just yellow walls, silk lanterns, and the slow current of the Thu Bon River.
Suggestions:
The Food: In Da Nang, skip the hotel buffet. Find a street stall selling Banh Trang Thit Heo (pork rolls). The anchovy sauce is pungent, challenging, and utterly delicious.
Hoi An: The Japanese Covered Bridge is iconic, but the real magic is in the side alleys away from the main drag.
Points of Interest: Golden Bridge, French Village, Fantasy Park.
The Experience: Today, we leave the earth. We drive to the foot of Ba Na Hills and board one of the world’s longest cable cars. The ascent is a silent flight over the jungle canopy. The temperature drops. The humidity vanishes. You arrive at a surreal French medieval village perched on a mountaintop. It is audacious, kitschy, and spectacular. The Golden Bridge awaits—a ribbon of gold held by two giant, weathered hands. It looks like a frame from a fantasy movie, suspended in the mist. The Afternoon: Explore the Fantasy Park or descend into the Debay Wine Cellar. It is a theme park, yes, but the location makes it feel like a dream.
Suggestions:
The Photo: The Golden Bridge gets crowded. Go immediately upon arrival or wait until the lunch rush. The fog rolls in fast; use it for mood.
Points of Interest: The Heritage Train, Hai Van Pass, Imperial Citadel, Thien Mu Pagoda.
The Experience: This is the climax. We do not take the bus. We board the Heritage Train from Da Nang Station. This is one of the most beautiful rail journeys on the planet. The train snakes around the Hai Van Pass, clinging to the cliffside. To your right, the ocean stretches to infinity; to your left, the jungle wall. It is slow, rhythmic, and hypnotic. We arrive in Hue, the sorrowful capital. We walk the Imperial Citadel, a vast complex of palaces and temples where the Nguyen Dynasty lived and died. We end at Thien Mu Pagoda, standing by the Perfume River, listening to the temple bell that is said to be heard for miles.
Suggestions:
The Train Seat: When booking or boarding, fight for a window seat on the right side (facing north). That is where the ocean views are.
The Cuisine: Hue food is royal food. Try the Banh Beo (water fern cakes). They are delicate, spicy, and addictive.
It happens on Day 3, roughly forty minutes after the train leaves Da Nang. The diesel engine strains as it climbs the pass. You look out the window and the ground disappears. There is nothing between you and the blue water but a sheer drop and a narrow steel track. The train curves around a promontory, revealing the crescent of Lang Co Bay below. The rhythm of the wheels—clack-clack, clack-clack—syncs with your heartbeat. It is a moment of pure, analog travel joy that no airplane can replicate.
Walking through the Forbidden Purple City in Hue, I found a wall pockmarked with bullet holes from 1968. A young tour guide was explaining the architecture, but an old man nearby, a local, simply ran his hand over the rough brick. He didn't say a word. He just touched the scar and walked away. Hue is like that. It is beautiful, but it holds its pain in the stones. The train ride there prepares you for it; the slow rhythm settles your mind before you step into the heavy history of the capital.
The Heritage Train is a new initiative, and seats are limited. The autumn weather in Central Vietnam is fleeting—the perfect window between the summer heat and the winter monsoons. You need to feel the mist on Ba Na and the rattle of the train tracks. Pack your camera. The train leaves at 07:30.
